Michael Arellanes II, founder of MA2 Studio, fuses tectonic synergies and envisions futuristic hybrid architectural volumes with his new AI-generated series, ‘Synthetic Futures’. Created using Midjourney, the project explores the limits of artificial intelligence, rendering dynamically fluid facades, openings, and structural envelopes from the future. In bold expressions, hybrid configurations of metallic panels, concrete, and glass, are curved, pleated and layered to reveal monumental structures.

With ‘Synthetic Futures’, MA2 Studio considers how to make AI technologies conform to the hands of the user, in order to generate an architecture or aesthetic consistent with an existing portfolio. Experimenting with artificial intelligence complexity, in particular the program Midjourney, the designer tests its ability to create a transformative architectural language. The rendered AI tectonic surfaces and enclosures reveal layers of exuberant, dynamic segments and impressions of metal panels and concrete volumes woven and layered and folded into compositions that evoke fluidity. The resulting architectural structures emerge as unique, futuristic building components that function as facade and propagated building segments that morph as a continuous expression.

As architects and designers increasingly continue to test the limits of AI complexity, MA2 Studio experiments with its ability to create a consistent and controlled aesthetic. Explaining the conceptual objectives of the project, Michael Arellanes II of MA2 Studio notes how current AI image generators utilize text-to-image technologies to produce flat images or AI impressions with extraordinary results of the unexpected. ‘The unexpected results are the most intriguing aspect of this new paradigm. As designers test the limits of AI’s imagination and complex image compositions, new possibilities never seen before are emerging.’ notes the designer.
‘These images are from large data sets in which the AI is able to reference and stitch together, creating new and original images or impressions. However, the more complex, the more impressionistic. This leaves the designer with unresolved formal creations but with a pandoras box of unlimited associations for the AI to compose. The current users have diverse backgrounds and references for the AI to compute, meaning some of the images are from the gaming community, film, and fashion.’ he continues.
