Robert Carpenter
February 4, 1960 – January 24, 2022
Camden, South Carolina – Robert David Carpenter, “Bobby” was a designer, philanthropist, dedicated friend, and the life of the party. Always a story teller, he told a few last ones and then passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones.
He was born in Radford, Virginia, and moved to Summerville, South Carolina, in 1964. After college, he began his first career as a respiratory therapist in South Carolina. Later, upon meeting his partner, Dr. Garrett Saikley, he moved to California. There, he began a second career as a designer and launched his business, Residential Design Concepts. His projects included many notable celebrity clients and historic properties across the United States. Bobby moved with Garrett to Hawaii, where he lived for 26 years. He renovated and maintained multiple residences throughout South Carolina during this period.
In 2018, he moved back to South Carolina and purchased Cedar Knoll in Camden, in order to be closer to his family. This was his final passion project, where he extensively renovated and transformed the historic nearly 200-year-old home and gardens into the showplace it is now.
As a lifelong advocate and supporter of both the arts and education, Bobby was on the board of many organizations. These included the Honolulu Symphony, the American College of Building Arts, The Arts Center of Kershaw County, the Historic Camden Foundation, and The Governors School for Arts and Humanities in Greenville.
His survivors include Dr. Garrett Saikley, his devoted partner of 32 years, brothers Vic (Laurey) and John (Tracy), Son Robert Heyward Carpenter, niece Elizabeth, nephews Sheldon and Victor, grandchildren Rowan and Rheia-Ann, and other extended family members throughout the state. He was predeceased by his grandson Res.
A celebration of Bobby’s life will take place at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Historic Camden Foundation, The Arts Center of Kershaw County, The Governors School, or the philanthropic organization of your choice.
Bobby traveled the world, making many friends along the way. He lived life to the fullest and will be missed dearly.
