Because of a ransomware attack, the doors at multiple Bernalillo County buildings are closed.A lot of information on the county’s website is down too and that is hitting the real estate industry hard. “It’s having a ripple effect on the real estate market in general,” said Damon Maddox, the president of the New Mexico Association of Realtors.People in the real estate industry can’t access county information like taxes and deeds, so the industry is in a holding pattern and many clients are too.”It’s difficult for us to do our job if we can’t access the county website to get that public information,” Maddox said.That means people buying a house likely can’t move into it and people selling a house may get stuck making another mortgage payment they were not expecting.”Right now we’re kind of in this limbo area, trying to do what’s best for our clients and represent everybody’s best interest but this is just a gray area,” said Katie Carpenter, a realtor with the Maddox Company. A spokeswoman for the county says they are working around the clock to try and resolve the cyber attack and says they’ve hired outside experts to help.”Just know the county is working with a good team of people, long hours, the right people are at the table trying to figure this thing out,” said Bernalillo County spokeswoman Tia Bland. She says right now there is no timeline when the cyber attack on the county will be fixed.
