President inaugurates Mughal-era inspired ‘Heritage Park’ in Old Delhi

President Ram Nath Kovind Sunday inaugurated a ‘Heritage Park’, located opposite Parade Ground parking between two historical monuments — the Red Fort and the Jama Masjid.

The project, executed by the North MCD, is spread across 8,650 sqm. Former Union minister Vijay Goel said the park’s theme is inspired by Mughal-era architecture, typical of Shahjahanabad (Walled City).

The canopies of the baradaris (pavilion) — the centrepiece of the garden — are made of red sandstone, white marble and Dholpur stones while the walls sport stone jaali work. The walkways are also made of red sandstone and white marble.

“One can find different features including baradaris, an open-air theatre, panorama, chhatris, among others at the park,” said a senior official.

The park is expected to be one of the major tourist spots and a cultural hub in the Walled City. Tourists will be able to find delicacies of Chandni Chowk being served here as well as handicrafts, the official said.

The park has been named after Charti Lal Goel, former deputy mayor of the erstwhile MCD and the first speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly (1993-98).

In the first phase, an area of about 1.75 acres has been developed at an estimated cost of Rs 7.65 crore, civic officials said. Under phase two of the project, the remaining 2.25 acres is to be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 10.03 crore. Before it was redeveloped, officials said the plot was covered in filth and encroached from multiple sides.
