PhD Position in Architecture, Live Projects as Drivers for Sustainable Urbanism job with NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY – NTNU

About the position

The Department of Architecture and Planning is looking for a PhD student for the project Live Projects as Drivers for Sustainable Urbanism, a project funded by NTNU. This research will be implemented as practice-based research, following the study program for PhD in Architecture or the study program for PhD in Artistic Research.

The aim of the project is to investigate how through Live studio projects sustainable urban development can be ensured and contemporaneously gain practical insight to ensure sustainable urban development as defined through the New European Bauhaus (NEB): Building frameworks for a “sustainable, inclusive future that is beautiful to our eyes, minds and souls.”

Live Projects can be explored as rapid approach to crisis response and furthermore as triggers of long-term sustainable development.

The position will focus on the interaction between aesthetics, sustainability and technology in the context of spatial form and urbanism, with an objective to strengthen the NEB (New European Bauhaus) principles and value basis in knowledge production at the department, faculty and NTNU.

One objective of the physical interventions is to investigate how interventions with a small ecological footprint and circularity can develop social and spatial constellations as a basis for more radical sustainable urban development as well as sustainable quality of life.  The projects will be carried out in close cooperation with public authorities, NGOs and the population affected by the initiative. The measures require a connection to teaching and research by connecting students to the projects by model from NTNU Live Studio.

The candidate will organize, lead and carry out intervention-based urban development projects. The PhD project will increase insight and knowledge about how pilots, experiments and moderate measures with the involvement of a multitude of actors – including students – can contribute to the development of existing and new city structures. The candidate is encouraged to use a broad variety of theories and methods to plan, implement and evaluate the temporary interventions.

The position is planned as a three yeas PhD period with optional one additional year of working duties at the department. An extension of the study period when e.g. combining it with other practice might be considered by the department.  In particular case the position might be open for postdoc.

You will report to the Head of Department.
