Opinion | Let the billionaire build his own stadium

As reported in the March 8 Metro article “Saslaw moves to close potential loopholes in Commanders stadium bill,” Virginia lawmakers, including Senate Majority Leader Richard L. Saslaw (D-Fairfax) and Del. Barry D. Knight (R-Virginia Beach), are proposing $350 million in Virginia taxpayers’ money to finance a new stadium for the Commanders football team in order to lure the team to Northern Virginia. Lawmakers, what are you thinking? Virginia taxpayers, pay attention! The reason Virginia doesn’t already have a professional sports stadium is because it is not a prudent use of taxpayer money. Virginia taxpayers should not subsidize the private business venture of a billionaire nor take on the risk of a real estate development failure.
