Whether it’s Sidharth Malhotra’s bachelor pad or Falguni and Shane Peacock’s glitzy boutiques, Gauri Khan has spent over a decade making the world a little more glamorous. The interior designer and entrepreneur has come a long way from what began as an experiment revamping her Mumbai home, Mannat, having since launched her own design studio in 2014, created a furniture line that was showcased at the Maison des Objets in Paris, and home decor collaborations with international designers such as Roberto Cavalli and Ralph Lauren. “I think learning is a process that has always intrigued me and helped me stay ahead in this industry,” she tells us over a phone call.
Khan is now excited to share some of her expertise—and perhaps a few industry secrets—with a newly launched interior design course on The Designer’s Class. Founded by Samarth Bajaj, the e-learning platform features masterclasses in fashion and design from industry stalwarts such as Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, Rhea Kapoor, Masaba, and celebrity stylist Tanya Ghavri. “We were very particular about who we brought on board—they had to be stalwarts of the industry and who better than Gauri Khan to teach interior design?” beams Bajaj.
Besides a module on the foundations of interior design, Gauri Khan’s masterclass series also includes modules on residential design, corporate design, retail, and lighting. The latter gets a special mention from the designer whose project signatures include sparkling chandeliers, rich colour palettes, plush materials and an innate understanding that there’s a fine line between luxury and ostentation.”I’m looking forward to the module that educates students on the use of sustainable practices in interior design,” she adds.
Each module is self-paced and available on demand for up to a year once purchased. You can sign up for the entire bundle or choose one that strikes your fancy. The course includes both video tutorials and assignments. “The biggest misconception is that interior design is expensive and you need a high budget to make a place look beautiful,” Khan says. Prior experience in art or design isn’t required, she emphasizes, explaining that she hopes to give students of all ages a holistic understanding of the industry so they may use this knowledge to “take forward their inspiration into realistic interior design projects”.
