Full-time permanent position (subject to probation)

Under the direct or general supervision by the Environmental Sustainability Director, the Permit Services Technician explains building codes, ordinances, procedures and requirements to homeowners, developers and contractors pertaining to land development and improvement permit requests and concerns. Processes building permit applications for new construction of building modifications within the City. Receives plans, calculates fees, ensures that appropriate licenses are obtained by contractors; routes plans for review and issues permits; schedules, logs, and maintains files regarding building inspections. Performs related work as required.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the current California building codes sufficient to answer questions and provide information to the public, construction types and building inspection procedures and requirements, applicable fire, zoning, and related laws and regulations. The skill to read and interpret plans, specifications, related construction documents and maps, calculate square footage, fees and/or penalties from plans. Must have the ability to interpret, apply, and explain policies and procedures; make accurate arithmetic, financial, and statistical computations. The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service skills and be able to effectively interact with the public in a positive and helpful manner in addition to handling multiple projects while working comfortably in a fast-paced team environment.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Equivalent to completion of twelfth (12th) grade. College level coursework in building, planning, or a related field is desirable. One (1) year of previous experience in the building, construction, or related industries. Experience in dealing with the public and working in a public agency setting is desirable. Must possess and maintain a valid California class C driver license and have a satisfactory driving record. Possession of a certification as a Building Technician, CALBO and/or ICC, and/or trade certificates such as plumbing, electrical, mechanical combination inspection, are highly desirable.
