How Dr. Gabbay’s Education in Architecture Influenced His Career as One of Beverly Hills’ Top Plastic Surgeon

Plastic surgery and architecture are disciplines that require attention to detail and precision to create an aesthetic beauty. Board-certified Plastic Surgeon and Beauty Doctor, Dr. Gabbay, brings his education in art and architecture to deliver the results that his patients envision and dream about.

From an early age, Dr. Gabbay was fascinated by the Renaissance and Leonardo da Vinci. Growing up with a father, who was an architect, Dr. Gabbay took architecture classes in high school and considered pursuing a career in architecture for many years.

“I now often say that my dad and I do the same job, we just use different materials!” says Dr. Gabbay during the interview.

Dr. Gabbay realized that he loved the art of architecture rather than the practice, therefore he ultimately decided to pursue a career in medicine, a subject that he excelled at in school. After graduating from college, Dr. Gabbay started doing research for the Department of Surgery at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA. Every summer during his years at college and medical school, he returned to Cedars to work and learn even more about medicine.

While studying molecular biology at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Gabbay decided to minor in art in order to get the most well-rounded education. He made unique sculptures, created show-stopping performance pieces, and even studied film.

During Dr. Gabbay’s childhood, his mother and himself would go to museums to learn about important figures in history. Dr. Gabbay’s mom told him how Jonas Salk developed one of the first successful polio vaccines. Dr. Gabbay was inspired by how Salk used his fame to establish a groundbreaking research institute in San Diego. As Dr. Gabbay grew to love architecture more, his dad told him about Louis Khan, the architect of the Salk Institute. Dr. Gabbay had a great admiration for the beautiful building, so he decided to work in a laboratory at the Salk Institute during his time at college.

Dr. Gabbay studied medicine at the College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University. He is thankful for the opportunity to meet people of different perspectives and experience places that were different from what he was used to in southern California. While studying, Dr. Gabbay realized that surgery was the right career path for him. Thanks to his passion for architecture, Dr. Gabbay liked to use his hands to create and immediately see the results of his work. During the interview, Dr. Gabbay says, “It is a specialty that is based in human anatomy… Something I’ve always loved. I would always say ‘you can play with anatomy in plastic surgery.’”

After graduating from medical school, Dr. Gabbay was selected to study at Cedars-Sinai’s prestigious general surgery residency where he trained in all aspects of surgery for seven years. During his residency, Dr. Gabbay published over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters as a researcher in the division of plastic surgery at UCLA. After his time at Cedars Sinai, Dr. Gabbay was chosen for UCLA’s plastic surgery fellowship. Dr. Gabbay worked with the leaders in the world of plastic surgery where he learned of the most innovative techniques. Dr. Gabbay finished his training at UCLA in 2011. Over that time, he grew and developed his private practice where he is the Medical Director of Gabbay Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, California.

Dr. Gabbay specializes in breast and body contouring. The most common procedures that he carries out are liposuction, Brazilian butt lifts, tummy tucks, breast augmentation, reductions, and complex revisions. Dr. Gabbay believes in delivering the results that his patients envision. He feels that his patient’s experience is key to success.

Dr. Gabbay’s goal of his practice is to help people achieve something that is meaningful for them. He ensures his patients are comfortable from the first encounter along the entire process and beyond. Dr. Gabbay feels that the most critical factor in successfully delivering the results his patients seek is clear and detailed communication.

“It is critical that my patient and I are on exactly the same page before we ever step foot in the operating room,” says Dr. Gabbay. During consultations, he goes into detail to try to understand what his patient is seeking. He also explains carefully what he can deliver and what their body will allow.
